INTRODUCTION 

In this Part we cover all those external-beam radiotherapy techniques that, for a variety of reasons, do not easily fit into conventional treatment planning (Part G). Today Conformal Therapy (CFRT)* is no longer considered to be a special technique, but it is used here as a foundation for introducing Intensity-Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) which is a particular form of CFRT (Chapter 43). The deceptively simple idea of introducing another degree of freedom in treatment planning, namely to create deliberate variations or modulations in the intensity across the beam, has spawned an unprecedented period of development in treatment machine technology (e.g. dynamically controlled multileaf collimators (MLC)), in treatment planning systems capable of so-called inverse planning, and also in the search for truly meaningful criteria by which to judge the merit of a treatment plan (see Part G, Chapter 36). A separate chapter is devoted to the clinical implementation of IMRT (Chapter 44).
