Abstract--This paper presents an electronic device, called
SmartWand, which can help a visually impaired person walk
around more safely. Attached to a conventional white cane, the
SmartWand detects obstacles that cannot be detected by a
traditional cane and gives warnings in the forms of vibration or
sound. In addition to obstacle detection, it also provides functions
to detect colors of objects and the brightness of surroundings.
II. SYSTEM CONFIGURATION
The SmartWand consists of an ultrasonic sensor to detect
obstacles; a color sensor to detect the colors of objects; a
brightness sensor to detect the brightness of surroundings; a
micro-processor and electric circuits to process sensing data; a
vibrator to warn of the existence of an obstacle; memory to
store the voice warning data; a speaker; and, a power supply
(Fig. 2). The specifications of each component are shown in
Table. I.
I. INTRODUCTION
We are introducing an electronic device, called SmartWand,
which detects obstacles using an ultrasonic sensor. In addition
to obstacle detection, the SmartWand also provides functions
to detect the colors of objects and the brightness of
surroundings. Attached to a conventional white cane (Fig. 1),
it detects the obstacles in front of an upper body, which cannot
be detected by a traditional cane. The SmartWand introduced
in this paper is the second version of a prototype which has
been improved based on a user study. It has been improved in
terms of functionality as well as appearance. The new
functions added include the elimination of impact errors,
caused by tapping the ground, and the restriction of obstacles
detected only in the forward moving direction. To
commercialize the device, the study to improve reliability and
comfort will continue.

The previous development of devices for the visually
impaired includes the Ultracane[1,7], which uses an ultrasonic
sensor; the Laser Cane[4] and the Teletact[5,6], which use
laser sensors; and, a wearable device called Openeyes[8].
These devices require the learning of new walking and caning
patterns or have problems of high-error rates, etc.
